I CHING · DECISION CONTEXT

Should you quit your job? The I Ching will not answer. It shows you which situation you are actually standing in.

What this page is (self-contained)This page is about "Should I quit my job?". It does not answer should you or should you not. It breaks the question into one path across three hexagrams: 乾, 履, 需, standing for three different sticking points. Reading it gives you checkable facts (number, trigrams, inner hexagram) and one step you can take today. It gives no verdict, predicts nothing, and does not decide for you.

No one who tells you to leave or to stay is making a decision that only you will have to pay for. This page will not make it for you. It does one thing: it helps you see where you are actually stuck.

Part one · One path, not three answers

If the problem is that it no longer fits
You have the strength, and there is nowhere to put it
Start here. This hexagram is not about whether you are good enough. It is about whether the work deserves what you bring.

You are somewhere past the point where the job can use what you actually have. The work is smaller than your capability. What wears you down is not the difficulty. It is spending that capability on something that does not deserve it. Other people are still deciding whether to begin. You are already thinking about how not to waste it.

In one line
Capacity is what has not been filled yet. What is already full cannot take anything new.
One action
Write down three things on your plate. Mark which one takes the most energy and which one produces the least.
One question
Am I not working hard enough, or am I working hard in a place that is already full?
Do just this today
Today, talk for ten minutes with someone you have never worked with about what you are doing.
What this does not doThis does not tell you to resign, and it does not tell you to start a company. It only points out that what you feel is closer to a poor fit than to a lack of effort. Those are opposites, and each one needs a different response.
Most likely misuseThe easiest misuse is reading it as reassurance that you were born to start a business. How big a container you need is your judgement. This text is not a permit.
How this moves forwardThe way forward is not to strain harder. It is to admit that this place cannot hold what you bring. Until you admit it, you will keep assuming you are not good enough.
If the problem is a mismatch in position
Promoted before you felt ready
This one says: you assume the problem is the person. It may be the position.

You are in a position that sits above what you have actually built. Other people treat you according to your title, and you know that a good part of what that title requires has not been filled in yet. So you move carefully, make no mistakes, and dare do nothing that could be noticed.

Where parts do not interact, there is no whole to speak of.
One action
Write the three abilities this position requires, and mark each one enough or not enough.
One question
Am I building into the position, or protecting it?
Do just this today
Today, write down what is already enough, and for what is not, find the one most relevant person to contact.
What this does not doThis does not tell you to resign, and it does not tell you to white-knuckle it. It only makes visible where the pressure actually comes from: the mismatch between the position and what you have, not any flaw in you.
Most likely misuseThe easiest misuse is to read this as a verdict that you do not belong. A mismatch is structural. Turning a structural problem into a verdict about your own worth is the most expensive mistake available here.
How this moves forwardThe way forward is not to wait for the conditions to be ready. It is to give the waiting a deadline that can be judged: if it has not arrived in three months, you do the other thing. If it has not arrived by then, this is what you let go of.
If the problem is that you are waiting
Waiting for conditions that never come
The hardest part of this one: the condition you are waiting for may never arrive at all.

You can see the opening and you have not moved. The conditions look incomplete, so you wait. Enough savings. Family agreement. The industry picking up. A better moment. Time passes. People around you start. You are still waiting for the same thing.

In one line
The strongest zone is the threshold. How far you are from it has to be measured first.
One action
Turn the condition you are waiting for into a sentence that can be judged: if it does not arrive in three months, what do I do?
One question
Is this something I genuinely need, or is it the thing I use so I do not have to start?
Do just this today
Today, rewrite I am waiting for conditions to be ready as: if they are not ready in three months, I do B.
What this does not doThis does not rush you, and it does not claim your conditions are met. It only asks you to turn waiting into something that can be judged true or false.
Most likely misuseThe easiest misuse is to treat waiting as a form of prudence. Prudence is a decision made after measuring the gap. Waiting without measuring is not prudence — it is delay.

Number, trigrams, inner hexagram, reversed, inverted, palace and seasonal phase all come from the original I Ching text and can be checked.

The arrangement (which three hexagrams, in what order, with what bridges) and the situation descriptions are original to this project. They are not an authoritative reading of the original.

Part two · The honest part

This page will not tell you to leave and will not tell you to stay. Read together, the three hexagrams point at one easily missed thing: the wish to leave often comes not from the place being bad, but from having no sense of fit there. That does not rebuild itself by changing employers — and it is not guaranteed that a new employer fixes it either. Both statements must hold at once.

Part two · Which one is you
Do not overthink it. Pick the closest one. Claiming it yourself is more reliable than being guessed at.
Nothing here generates a prediction, and nothing you pick is uploaded.
