Should you start a company? The I Ching will not tell you to. It shows you which step you are actually stuck on.
What this page is (self-contained)This page is about "Should I start a company?". It does not answer should you or should you not. It breaks the question into one path across three hexagrams: 蒙, 屯, 需, standing for three different sticking points. Reading it gives you checkable facts (number, trigrams, inner hexagram) and one step you can take today. It gives no verdict, predicts nothing, and does not decide for you.
This page should not make the decision for you. It can separate one thing though: whether you have not found the entry point yet, or whether you are already waiting for a moment that will never come. Those two people need to do completely different things.
Start here. What is missing is not ability, and not material. It is an entry point you can actually ask about.
You are in a field you have just entered. What you lack before you start is not ability. It is an entry point — what to read first, what counts as obvious, what to ask so the question actually reaches something. So you keep reading, and the more you read the more you feel everything must be understood, and the less you dare begin.
Does this sound like you
I have saved a lot of introductory material and never explained any of it to anyone.
I am afraid of asking a beginner question, so I hold it in.
The more I read, the deeper and more bottomless it seems.
Isomorphism means the same rule acting again and again. Change the rule and the isomorphism is broken.
One action
Cut your saved introductory material down to three, and do only the first page of the first one.
One question
Am I trying to understand, or trying to begin? Which kind of time am I spending on preparation?
Do just this today
Today, find one person who is actually doing this and ask them one question: what is the thing you most wish you had not got wrong?
What this does not doThis does not tell you to study more, and it does not say you have studied enough. It only points out that what you are missing may not be more material — it may be one question you can actually ask.
Most likely misuseThe easiest misuse is to use it as a legitimate reason for still preparing. A preparation phase with no end date becomes a way of never starting.
How this moves forwardThe way forward is not another course. It is asking one person out loud. The entry point you are missing only appears through conversation, not through material.
This one says: what you are feeling right now is not evidence of inability. It ships with the stage itself.
You are at the beginning, and it is a mess. No rules yet. No process. Not even a clear picture of what failure is supposed to look like. The hard part is not the difficulty. It is that everyone around you, including you, believes it is supposed to be smooth. So the moment it is rough, everybody panics.
Does this sound like you
Something broke on day one, and now I am wondering whether it is me.
There is no process to follow. Everything is firefighting.
When someone asks how it is going, I have nothing to report.
The first thing I do when something goes wrong is hide it.
Not entering is the default state of disorder. Order needs supply every day, and subtracting matters as much as adding.
One action
Take the three things you firefight most, and write one crude rule for each. Rules first, fluency later.
One question
Am I adding experience, or am I adding process? Is what I am missing right now the same thing?
Do just this today
Today, write down the mistake that happens most, turn it into one line of what to do first, and put it where you can see it.
What this does not doThis does not promise it gets easier once you are through. It only says the disorder right now belongs to the starting point, and is not evidence that you cannot do it.
Most likely misuseThe easiest misuse is to read it as encouragement: survive this and it gets better. It makes no such promise. It only says the mess is standard at this stage.
How this moves forwardThe way forward is not feeling more certain. It is doing the smallest step first. What you need is evidence that you have started, not evidence that you have understood.
If you are still waiting for conditions to be right
The hardest part of this one: the condition you are waiting for may be the thing you use so you do not have to start.
You can see the opening and you have not moved. The conditions look incomplete, so you wait. Enough savings. Family agreement. The industry picking up. A better moment. Time passes. People around you start. You are still waiting for the same thing.
Does this sound like you
I have a list of conditions and each one is almost, but not quite, met.
Every few months I say I will wait a bit longer.
I see others have already done it and it unsettles me.
I have prepared for a long time, and nobody has seen any of it.
The strongest zone is the threshold. How far you are from it has to be measured first.
One action
Turn the condition you are waiting for into a sentence that can be judged: if it does not arrive in three months, what do I do?
One question
Is this something I genuinely need, or is it the thing I use so I do not have to start?
Do just this today
Today, rewrite I am waiting for conditions to be ready as: if they are not ready in three months, I do B.
What this does not doThis does not rush you, and it does not claim your conditions are met. It only asks you to turn waiting into something that can be judged true or false.
Most likely misuseThe easiest misuse is to treat waiting as a form of prudence. Prudence is a decision made after measuring the gap. Waiting without measuring is not prudence — it is delay.

Number, trigrams, inner hexagram, reversed, inverted, palace and seasonal phase all come from the original I Ching text and can be checked.
The arrangement (which three hexagrams, in what order, with what bridges) and the situation descriptions are original to this project. They are not an authoritative reading of the original.
Part two · The honest part
This page will not tell you to start, and it will not tell you not to. It will say only the thing that keeps getting skipped: the hard part of starting is not the beginning. It is the stretch after it, with no feedback, no applause, and nobody telling you whether you are getting it right. Most people do not lose because they never started. They lose because they could not get through the stretch where nobody is watching — and the length of that stretch has very little to do with whether the project is any good.
Part two · Which one is you
Do not overthink it. Pick the closest one. Claiming it yourself is more reliable than being guessed at.
Nothing here generates a prediction, and nothing you pick is uploaded.
