Ding: You took on something bigger, and you keep carrying it
This page describes a situation. It gives no verdict. The number, trigrams and inner hexagram are all checkable.
Answer first (self-contained)Ding (hexagram 50, 离 over 巽) describes this kind of situation: You took on something bigger, and you keep carrying it. It does not predict anything and it does not decide for you. It does one thing: it makes visible which dynamic you are currently inside, so you can recognise whether you are in it. There are three ways to check. First, the situation itself: You took on something bigger, and you keep carrying it. Second, three checkable facts below (the number, the two trigrams, and the inner hexagram). Third, the three steps at the bottom, and whether you have done any of them.
What situation this is
The new thing is larger than what you can hold. Every day it brings work you did not have before. You think it is a new beginning. It is a heavier load with a new name. And it is still empty. Nobody has put anything in it yet.

How it differs from the neighbours
Previous hexagram Ge (hexagram 49) describes: You have already started, and you cannot go back.
Next hexagram Zhen (hexagram 51) describes: Everyone panicked, and you did not move.
The inner hexagram (internal force) The inner hexagram is 夬. The situation on this page is what is visible; Jue is the break, so the container breaks before it can be used, and that is the danger here. is what has been going on inside it. They are different layers, and reading one as the other is the usual mistake.
Three steps you can take today
- Capacity is what has not been filled yet. What is already full cannot take anything new.
- Write down what you are carrying now, and how many things are in it.
- Am I carrying this because I want it, or because I think I should?
Do just this today Today, put the heaviest thing in the load down. Set it on the ground and leave it.
Does this sound like you
- The new thing is bigger and the burden is heavier.
- I changed the tool and the problem is the same.
- It is still empty and nobody has put anything in it.
- I am dealing with the extra work it brings every day.
How this path works, and where it breaksDing is a vessel with a weight it can carry. Jue inside it says the vessel breaks before it is filled. So the next step is to put down the heaviest part of the load. And notice that it is still empty, which means nobody else signed up for this either.
Inner hexagram: the internal forceJue is the break, so the container breaks before it can be used, and that is the danger here.
What this hexagram does not doThis does not tell you to go back to the old one. Ding is a vessel. What goes in it and who carries it decide the outcome, and it is still empty.
Most likely misuseThe easiest misuse is reading it as encouragement to take on more. Ding is about position and weight. When you cannot carry it, that is not character. That is a position that does not fit.
